About the Music Program at St. John Neumann

The arts have long been an integral part and tradition in the life of the Catholic church. As stated by Pope John Paul II "The church needs the arts especially for its liturgy which - all in all - is meant to be a work of art inspired by faith, drawing upon all the creative forces of architecture, sculpture and painting , music and poetry." (12 September 1983) Through the various ministries available in the church, the arts are used to enhance the worship life of the community here at St. John Neumann. In addition to providing music at Mass, we offer occasional concerts which provide an opportunity for the community at large to hear some very fine musical offerings from different artists.

VOCAL MUSIC MINISTRIES:

ADULTS AND TEENS

Cantors (5:00 p.m. Mass Saturday, 7:30 a.m. Mass Sunday, most Summer Masses) Are you the one who starts the singing at family gatherings? You may be an undiscovered cantor. Leading our sung prayer, cantors encourage and inspire congregational singing. Not all cantors are choir members. If you can learn the music on your own and share your talent with others, please audition with the Director of Music.

Festival Choir (9:30 a.m. Mass Sunday) Open to singers of all ages who enjoy sacred music ranging from classical to contemporary, this group rehearses on Thursdays from 7:30-9:30 p.m. in the music room. Please meet with the Director for voice placement.

Schola (11:30 a.m. Mass Sunday) Got pipes? This small ensemble of highly skilled vocalists sings a repertoire of Baroque, Renaissance, classical and contemporary styles. Rehearsals are on Sundays from 7:30-9:30 p.m. in the music room. Please schedule an audition with the Director of Music.

Contemporary Ensemble (5:30 p.m. Mass Sunday) Are contemporary and gospel music your style? If you sing or play an instrument, you may find your niche here. This ensemble rehearses on Sundays from 4:00-5:15 p.m. in the Church. Please schedule an interview or audition with the Director.

Women's Ensemble (5:00 p.m Mass, 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month) If your heart says, "Sing!", but your schedule says, "WHEN????" consider joining this choir of women from high school age on up. Rehearsals are at 3:30 p.m. in the music room, immediately preceding selected Saturday Masses. There may be more frequent rehearsals in the weeks leading up to Christmas and Easter. Please schedule an interview or audition with the Director.

CHILDREN Participating in a children's choir provides an excellent opportunity for children to find a place in the church where they can develop self-expression, leadership qualities, self-discipline, and group disciplines. At the same time, they will enjoy the positive atmosphere of fellowship through liturgical music.

Angel Choir
Pre-k – Grade 2 – Tuesdays : 4:00 – 4:30 (Beginning Jan 2008)
We may be born with talent, but we have to learn to use it. These choirs are primarily for educational purposes. Though not formal choirs, the Angel Choir does have a few opportunities throughout the year to sing at Mass (5:00 Saturday) with the older Children's Choir. Music for these groups comprises both fun and serious songs. We will introduce some songs sung at Mass, as well as some just for enjoyment. Rehearsals are in the nursery.

Children's Choir - Grades 3-6
(5:00 p.m. Mass Saturday) Blessing us with their voices on the first Saturday of the month (October through May) and on Christmas Eve and Easter Sunday, the Children's choir rehearses on Tuesdays from 4:45-5:45 p.m. in the music room.

Youth Choir - Grades 6-8
(5:00 p.m. Mass Saturday) And they just keep getting better! Our generous middle school students offer their time and talent on the third Saturday of each month at the 5:00 p.m. Mass and at rehearsals on Tuesdays from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in the music room.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC MINISTRIES:

Parish Bell Choir: Formed more than ten years ago, our bell choir just keeps on ringing for special liturgies and other events. Open to high school students and adults, rehearsals are on Mondays from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Please contact the Music Director if interested.

Instruments
A String and Woodwind Orchestra provides the wind (and strings) soaring over, under and around our wings every Sunday morning at the 9:30 Mass. Rehearsals are on Wednesdays from 5:30-6:45 p.m. Other instrumentalists (guitar, horns, harp, percussion, etc) are encouraged to volunteer as well, as opportunities often exist for weekly or occasional participation, depending on the instrument, and the instrumentalist's availability. Please schedule an audition with the Director of Music.

SOUND SYSTEM MINISTRY:

Do you have a knack for technology and a good ear? If so, you might be an ideal sound mixer for our weekly liturgical services. Training is provided. Please call the Music Director for more information.
