Director of Music


St. John Neumann Catholic Church (SJN) is seeking a dynamic and engaging Director of Music to provide, organize, and/or coordinate music for all weekend and Holy Day Masses and other special liturgies at St. John Neumann Catholic Church.
This position reports to the SJN Pastor.

Regular Duties and Responsibilities


  • Plan music selections and lead music from the piano/organ for some of the six weekend liturgies.
  • Prepare, rehearse, and lead music at Holy Day Masses, funerals, penance services, and other special liturgies/services (monthly Taizé Prayer, annual Lessons & Carols, concerts, etc.).
  • Rehearse St. John Neumann Chorale (Sunday 9:30 a.m.) and cantors (various masses).
  • Coordinate with accompanists and the directors of the Women's Ensemble, Bell Choir, Contemporary Ensemble, and Hispanic Music Groups.
  • Hire and rehearse professional musicians for major holidays and Taizé Prayer.
  • Supervise sound system operation.
  • Collaborate with the Coordinator of Liturgy and oversee the Music & Liturgy Assistant on planning SJN liturgies, supervising the scheduling of cantors, choirs and accompanists and maintaining the register for all convalidations and marriages that occur at SJN.
  • Oversee ongoing development of SJN singers and accompanists and recruit new musicians.
  • Prepare the music department annual budget.
  • Oversee the organization of the music library and volunteers who manage and catalogue the library.


Skills, Experience, and Knowledge Requirement


  • Excellent keyboard skills — piano and organ. Must play hymns and service music in a singable manner.
  • Five years' experience working in a liturgical music environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in music or related field.
  • Knowledge of church liturgical music guidelines, especially as outlined by Vatican II. Must be familiar with the General Instruction of the Roman Missal and Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of vocal, choral technique, and choral conducting.
  • Familiarity in working with Spanish-speaking ensembles.


Resources at SJN include two baby grand pianos, a Rodgers organ in the church with 9 ranks of Ruffati pipes, and another Rodgers organ in the chapel.

Director of Faith Formation


The Director of Faith Formation provides the vision and coordinates the development of all parish faith formation programs for children, youth, and adults ensuring that all catechetical training and sacramental preparation align with the teachings of the Catholic Church and guidelines of the Arlington Diocese.
 
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:


  • Works closely with the Pastor and collaborates regularly with clergy and staff. Manages staff, budgets, and resources, ensuring all programs meet parish standards. Participates in policy development, goal-setting, and strategic planning for faith formation initiatives.
  • Leads and supervises the Faith Formation team of three coordinators and two support staff providing supervision and guidance as well as ensuring alignment with Church teachings and diocesan guidelines.
  • Develops, plans, and implements the faith formation of our young people including Sacramental Preparation (First Reconciliation, First Communion, Confirmation).
  • Instructs parents/godparents in their role as a child's first teacher in their lifelong journey of faith while administering the processes associated with the Sacrament of Baptism.
  • Engages and develops the faith of all parishioners including Adapted Religious Education (ARE), the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) and a variety of Adult Formation programs and ministries.
  • Recruits, trains, and supervises volunteers, including catechists and other non-paid staff and ensures compliance with Safe Environment Protocols.
  • A master's degree in Pastoral Studies, Theology, or a related field is required as well as significant experience in Faith Formation and supervising staff and volunteers.

Preschool Assistant Teacher


St. John Neumann Catholic Preschool is seeking an Assistant Teacher for our Monday–Friday Pre-K Class (half-day). Must love working with young children and have several years of experience working with them. Assistant Teachers must have a minimum of a High School Diploma, and early Childhood Education college coursework is preferred.


Responsibilities include:


  • supporting the Lead Teacher in implementing creative activities based on curriculum
  • working with young children to promote social-emotional development as well as focusing on learning objectives
  • maintaining a neat, clean, and safe classroom environment
  • attending meetings, trainings, and other Preschool events


This position is part-time: Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
